In Bad Actors, the prime minister’s adviser (“a home-grown Napoleon: nasty, British and short”) is plotting to take over the security services, while Russian spooks pull the strings behind the scenes. They have been banished for various mishaps to an outfit dubbed Slough House, because its remit is so removed from the action at spook HQ that it might as well be in the Berkshire town. The twist with Herron’s spies – the slow horses – is they are about as far from First Desk as it’s possible to get while still being agents.
“Amusing timing,” says Herron on that choice of title – as it certainly does not refer to Apple’s esteemed cast, including Kristen Scott Thomas as Diana Taverner, who has designs on the MI5 top job, and Jack Lowden as River Cartwright, the closest the series has to a hero.
